Four stunning nights in beautiful Split

Our Friday afternoon arrival into Split was a bittersweet moment. The end of our sail cycle but the beginning of a great stay, in a beautiful city.

As is our way, with started with a guided walking tour of the palace within the walled city, which orientated us nicely.

Craving something other than pizza or pasta, we found a Thai kitchen and indulged in pad Thai, spring rolls and a beef stir fry, before wandering the old town after dark.

Following our Saturday morning disembarkation from Emanuel, we stashed our bags and wandered to the beach and then to the best coffee in the world at Kava2.

Thankfully our Airbnb host enabled us to check into our harbour front accommodation early, at 11.30 and we couldn’t have been more grateful or more impressed!

Time to put the washing out and relax on the balcony as we watched Emanuel leave with new guests, before we headed over, through the old town, to relax on the massage table.

As it turns out, the balcony is a great place to have a Hvar Lavender Spritz!

Spritz in Split.

For some reason that can’t be explained we both agreed it would be a good idea to hire 50cc scooters and spend Sunday riding out to Klis Fortress and then on to the beach.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, but a bad idea when we found ourselves on a motorway!

But the monument is worth going to, with a great view back to Split.

To minimise the trauma we ditched google and plotted a way to the beach, one leg at a time, even finding a Diocletian aqueduct!

Slowly but surely we made our way to the beach at Podstrana. The swim was a welcome relief!

Turns out that Sunday isn’t a quiet day around this city of just 160k people. The motorway trip back to Split was daunting but we aced it! I knew we wouldn’t die …

Must be beer o’clock!

Every day, including Monday, is a good day to go to the beach. Some days demand two beaches.

But the best thing to do in the hottest part of a day in Split is to hang out on the balcony. An opportunity to reflect that it hasn’t always been peaceful and calm here.

Having procured Bosnian Marks (the currency) for our onward journey, we wandered up to the terrace for a final Croatian cocktail. We definitely heart Croatia! We will return some day and explore some more.
